Commercial Drone Operations
Situation: A commercial drone operator wishes to expand their business offerings in order to create new value for their customers, grow their market base and scale revenues. The operator collects a significant amount of drone data from its flights, and wants to understand how this data can be used to improve its operations, create new capabilities and support future projects.
Generative AI offers exciting opportunities for the drone operator. The ability to integrate and synthesize time-series flight data with unstructured information, such as FAA regulations, temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) and Advisory Circulars, mission plans and other data creates potential new opportunities for value creation.
Company management wishes to understand and explore the potential opportunities that Generative AI offers. They partnered with Strategy of Things to collaboratively explore use cases and develop proof-of-concept offerings that can be tested with customers and other drone operators.
Approach/Solution: We provided the operator with a baseline understanding of AI, including generative AI, to set expectations of what the technology is capable of at the present time. We then reviewed and discussed the operator's goals in order to develop an understanding of their intentions and what they really want to accomplish. From there, we discussed and explored potential "pain points" their customers and other drone operators face, and assessed the significance of those challenges. From there, we explored and assessed what information and data is needed to address the challenges. In addition, we reviewed the initial set of data to determine its completeness and what pre-processing is needed. A series of proof-of-concept candidates were identified and one was selected based on this assessment.
On the technology side, we reviewed and identified a number of models and tools for the pilot. Because of the drone operator's need to build and operationalize a successful proof-of-concept, we prioritized data security and scalability as major requirements. In addition, other considerations include the output accuracy, tokenization costs, and data types and sources. These considerations were used to select a platform, model and approach.
Result/Outcomes: The pilot project is currently in progress. Additional information will be provided upon project completion.
IoT Cybersecurity Standards and Best Practices
Situation: Cybersecurity is a major vulnerability and concern in today's digital products. A global industry association wishes to help its members improve the cybersecurity of their market offerings and field installations. One important way is to help their members understand and implement cybersecurity standards and best practices into its technology solutions.
However, this is not a simple task. There are a variety of standards developed by various standards development organizations (SDO). However, the standards and best practices are not easily understood, and may be misinterpreted. Furthermore, different industries, such as healthcare and energy, have specific regulations and standards. These standards evolve continuously and may vary geographically.
Similarly, one government organization responsible for standards recognizes that its cybersecurity standards and guidance documents are overwhelming and challenging to understand. They have internal efforts to simplify some of their guidance in order to increase understanding and adoption by marketplace and industry partners.
The industry association wishes to explore the use of generative AI to help their members understand what cybersecurity standards and best practices are applicable for their situation. They wish to have this relevant information delivered in a clear and unambiguous manner.
Approach/Solution: In collaboration with the industry association, we are defining what the "business problems" are. This will enable us to identify the top questions that their members will ask, and what the responses will look like. This allows us to collect and organize the necessary guidance and standards documents needed to build and train the models needed.
Result/Outcome: The project is ongoing.
